Veiga Lillian DeBenedetto, 100, Oconto, passed away Friday, February 1, 2019 at Rennes East, Peshtigo. Veiga was the child of the late Hubert Gustav Wilhelm Henkel and Lillian Tomina Miller. She was born at her grandmothers home in rural Winneconne, WI on September 22, 1918. She was baptized at Grace Lutheran Church in Winchester, WI on October 20, 1918. She was a child of God, which she cherished throughout the whole of her life. In 1937, she graduated from Fairview School of Nursing in Minneapolis, MN as a Registered Nurse. She worked at St. Luke’s Hospital in Milwaukee and at St. Mary’s Hospital in Tucson, AZ. It was while she was in Arizona that she met a dashing young man at the roller rink. She and Alex DeBenedetto fell in love and were married on June 15, 1943. In her professional career, she did private duty nursing through Theda Clark Hospital in Neenah, WI. She was privileged to care for some foundational Neenah families in their homes—the Kimberly, Clark, Bergstrom, and Banta families. She’s remembered as a person of great love, who gave all she had selflessly, willing to make any sacrifice for her family. In turn, her family lays her into the arms of God and celebrates, with her, the great hope we have together in Jesus Christ. She was a member of First American Lutheran Church, Oconto.
Veiga is survived by two sons, Rev. Richard DeBenedetto, Terry (Diane) DeBenedetto; four grandchildren, Crista DeBenedetto, Aaron (Meredith) DeBenedetto, Eric (Sarah) DeBenedetto, Tami DeBenedetto; eight great-grandchildren, Alexis & Gabriel Roth, Allie & Logan Mullikin, Alex & Terry DeBenedetto, Magdalena & Eli DeBenedetto. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alex (September 23, 1996), two brothers, Richard and Adolph Henkel, a sister, Sylvia Schulz, and a daughter-in-law, Ellice DeBenedetto.
The family will receive relatives and friends at First American Lutheran Church, Oconto, from 9 to 11 AM Tuesday, February 5, 2019. Memorial services will be conducted 11 AM Tuesday at the church with the Rev. Fred Mai officiating. Online condolences may be expressed at www.gallagherfuneralhome.net.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Unity Hospice.
