Obituary for Shirley I. Staidl

Shirley I. Staidl, 86, of the Town of Little River, passed away Saturday, January 23, 2010 at Bishops Court CBRF, Allouez, WI with her family by her side. Shirley was born December 31, 1923 in the Town of Oconto to the late Joseph and Regina (Streu) Cota. She married Chester C. Staidl on December 25, 1941. He preceded her in death on September 21, 2009. She grew beautiful flowers and vegetable gardens on their farm, took great care in homemaking, raising their family and was loved dearly by all who knew her. Shirley and Chester made Bishops Court residential care facility their home since February 2009. Shirley was an exceptional homemaker, very loving, high spirited, compassionate, and talented woman. As the eldest daughter in a family of seven, she learned to organize and perfectly plan every detail of family gatherings and celebrations.

Shirley graduated from Oconto High School in 1941. She held membership in Victory School 4-H Club, serving as Treasurer 2 yrs, Project Leader 15 yrs and as General Leader for 5 yrs for the Fairview Rockets 4-H Club; County Line Grange member 25 yrs, serving as Lecturer & Sunshine Chairperson; a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church, active as Sunday School teacher, Deacon, Trustee and member of the Womens Association. In 1940 she was chosen to represent Oconto County at the State Fair as its first Dairy Queen, and was escorted to the Butter Ball by her future husband, Chester. They met at Cream City Dance Hall and waltzed through 68 years of marriage. The couple were recognized for their contributions to the community by the Lena Civic Club in 1986, Rural Urban 1994, and honored to serve as Lena Dairyfest Parade Grand Marshals in 1997. In their retirement years they especially enjoyed time spent wintering in Florida.

Shirley is survived by three daughters Barbara (Richard) Jorgensen, Green Bay; Marcia Staidl, Green Bay; Judy Ferris, Oconto; brother, Lloyd (Doris) Cota, Green Bay; six grandchildren Jeffrey (Nicole) Jorgensen, Carolyn (Robert) Fuhr, Beth (Aaron) Zingler, Beau Ferris, Chad Staidl, Jerid Staidl . A son Charles (Chuck) Staidl preceded her in death on December 7, 2008; her sister Florence, brothers Stanley, Maurice, Gerald and Leroy Cota; father and mother-in-law Charles and Lillian (Sedo) Staidl; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Maynard and Frances Staidl.

Shirley lived a very vibrant active life until May of 2008, when she underwent aneurism surgery at UW-Hospital, Madison. The family wishes to thank the many compassionate doctors, nurses, and care givers who have helped her since that time, especially the staff at Bishops Court, St. Vincent Dialysis, Bay Area Medical Center, Oconto County Commission on Aging, Unity Hospice and Pastor Craig Alwin.

The family will receive relatives and friends at the First Presbyterian Church, Oconto, from 1 to 3 PM Thursday, January 28, 2010. Funeral services will be conducted 3 PM Thursday at the church with the Rev. Craig Alwin officiating. Burial will be at the Evergreen Cemetery.
