Obituary for Shirley A Bickel

Shirley Ann Bickel, 67, of Oconto passed away on July 8, 2011 at her home. Shirley was born on July 20, 1943 in Neenah, WI to the late Martin and Loretta (Lorge) Kerkhoff. She lived with her family in Gillett until she married Norman V. Bickel and moved to the Oconto area. Shirley was very active in her community and received the Outstanding Young Woman of Oconto County award in 1977. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, now Holy Trinity, and was a Befriender and past vice-president of the parish council. She was a founding member of the Town and Country Homemakers, the Friends of the Farnsworth Library, and the Oconto Garden Club. She was also a member of Little River HCE, the Oconto Woman’s Club, the Oconto County Historical Society, the Copper Culture Historical Society, the Ruby Hatters and a Reading Club. Shirley had a life-long love of learning and enjoyed the Learning in Retirement classes offered by UWGB for many years. She was also an adult literacy tutor and an English as a second language tutor. She had a passion for gardening and had completed the Master Gardener training through the UW Extension. Shirley worked at the Oconto County Reporter, St. Joseph Parish, Family and Child Learning Centers, Lifeskills and Bellin Behavioral Health. She also served as town treasurer for the Town of Little River for 10 years. In spite of her busy schedule, her family and home was always the central focus of her life. In 1996 Norm passed away and in 2006 she married David Swearingen, a former classmate from Gillett, who survives her. She is also survived by her children Tony (Vicki Mayer) Bickel, Madison, and his daughters Laura and Amanda; Sue (Tony) Hoffman, Oconto, and their children Ben and Megan; Dan (Tammy) Bickel, Oconto, and their children Dan Jr. And Brittney; and Lisa (Bob) Maier, Madison, and their children Abigail and Dylan. Step-children, Jenni Bone, Green Bay, and daughter Cassandra; Tammy Swearingen (Dave Szymanski), Sobieski, and daughters Alexandria and Sophia; and Tom (Sara) Swearingen, Manawa, and their daughter Brooklynn. She is further survived by one sister Constance Royston of Orangevale, CA and sister-in-law Dolores, and brothers-in-law Gerald and Frank Jr., plus many nieces, nephews and friends. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, brother John, sisters-in-law Donna and Loraine, brother-in-law Gordon, and niece Cheryl. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Gallagher Funeral Home, Oconto, from 4 to 8 PM Thursday, July 14, 2011 with prayer services by Fr. Joel Sember at 7:30 PM. Visitation will continue on Friday, July 15 from 10 to 11 AM at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will Co-Celebrated 11 AM Friday at the church with the Rev. Joel Sember and Rev. Tim Bickel officiating. Burial will be at the Oconto Catholic Cemetery. On line condolences may be expressed at www.gallagherfuneralhome.net. Her zest for life will always be remembered and her grace when faced with adversity will always be admired.
