Ruth M. Shufelt, 92, Oconto, passed away Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at Woodland Villages, Oconto. Ruth was born October 28, 1926 in the Town of Little River to Evelyn (Stuart) Whiting and Hector Belongia. She married Robert (Ducky) Shufelt on June 7, 1947 and they made their home on the family farm on Springbrook Road in the Town of Little River for many years. After graduation Ruth worked for the FBI as a Criminal Identification Clerk in Washington D.C. She also worked for the Telephone Company, Reminder and Oconto County as a School Health Aide. She enjoyed roller skating and jumping rope and won first prize at the Abrams Opera House. She enjoyed tumbling, bowling and dancing. She also enjoyed crafts and getting together with the Homemakers Club. She jogged four miles a day with her friend Roberta and continued after she moved back to the country. She was an active member in the Alter Rosary Society and St Vincent de Paul, shopping for nursing home patients and having birthday parties. As a member of St. Joseph Church she took communion to those in need and was on the Prayer Chain list taking and giving calls. Her family, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were her pride and joy and she shared many family gatherings.
Ruth is survived by two daughters, Rita (fiancee James Basiliere) Anderson, Debra (Jeff) Van Den Bogart; a son, Dennis (Debi) Shufelt; three sisters Delores Tunney, Jean Faulds, Karen (Clifford) Dembroski; a brother, Vernon (Dorothy) Belongia; seven grandchildren, Katie (Ryan) Vaubel, Sarah Larson, Travis (Jenny) Shufelt, Casey Shufelt, Melissa (Scott) Mansfield, Amanda (Darin) DeBaker, Joshua Eckes; eight great-grandchildren, Gavin, Emma, Lucas, Jacob, Kendall Taytum, Ivy and Miles. She was preceded in death by a sister, Marion (Harold) Shufelt; brother, Claude Belongia and brothers-in-law, Ralph Faulds and Thomas Tunney.
The family will receive relatives and friends at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Oconto, from 9 to 11 AM Saturday, February 2, 2019. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 AM Saturday at the church with Rev. Joel Sember officiating. Online condolences may be expressed at www.gallagherfuneralhome.net.
The family would like to thank Woodland Village Nursing Home and the many staff who cared for mom during her stay there.
