Ruth E. Meyers, 93, of Green Bay, passed away Thursday, January 27, 2011. She was the daughter of Arthur and Hattie (Classon) Leigh. Ruth was born March 3, 1917 and lived on the family homestead for 87 of her 93 years in a rural Oconto home in which she was born and raised. She graduated from Oconto High School in 1934. In 1935 she attended the Oconto Falls Teaching Normal and began her teaching career in 1936. She furthered her education by attending the University of Wi-Oshkosh.
On June 23, 1940 Ruth married Louis Meyers, from the town of Little River, at the Oconto Gospel chapel. Ruth and Louis were the first couple married in the new church at that time. They lived 5 years on the Meyers farm in Little River which Louis managed for his mother. They then bought a small farm in the town of Pensuakee on County J which was her original homestead.
Ruth taught school in Oconto and Brown County for 35 years. She retired from teaching in 1982. She spent the last 14 years teaching at Oconto Elementary. After retiring from teaching, Ruth and her husband Louis spent many winters vacationing in Florida. Ruth was a member of the Oconto Gospel Chapel. She was also a 50-year member of the Oconto County Association for Home and community Education known as the HCE and a member of Womens Missionary Prayer Fellowship at her church.
Ruth is survived by three sons; Roger (Michelle) Meyers, Green Bay; Ray (Lyn) Meyers, Westmont, IL; Rick (Cindy) Meyers, Sycamore, IL; a daughter Cindy (David) DeMille, Green Bay; a daughter-in-law Pamela Meyers, Oconto; two sisters-in-law Betty Leigh Cooper, and Jerry Brock; fifteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
The family always enjoyed coming to Grandmas house for special gatherings and especially at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Grandma always made sure that she had homemade Poppy seed bread, Parker house rolls and cinnamon rolls for the big occasions.
She was preceded in death on June 7, 1995 by her loving husband, Louis Meyers who she shared her life with for 55 years; a son Ranny Meyers who passed away 4 years ago; 3 brothers: Willard Leigh, Larry Leigh and his wife Helen; Elmer Leigh and her sister June (Leigh) DeLano and her brother-in-law Edward DeLano.
The family will receive relatives and friends at the Oconto Gospel Chapel, Oconto, from 9 to 11 AM Monday, January 31, 2011. Funeral services will be conducted 11 AM Monday at the church with the Rev. Peter Dorn officiating. Burial will be at the Evergreen Cemetery.
