Obituary for Robert John Reed

Every now and then, the Lord calls a great man to Heaven that makes you wonder if they needed a devoted, generous and playful soul. That was absolutely the case with Robert Reed, 61 of Oconto, a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. He began his eternal life on July 2, 2014 after a valiant battle with cancer. Bob was born March 15, 1953 to the late Robert and Lucille (Helmer) Reed. As a young man he worked for Reed’s Mink Ranch. He later began his career as a welder for Liquid Carbonic and continued that career at Cruiser’s Yachts for the past 30 years. He was humbled to know that his work was all over the world and truly took pride in all that he did. Bob always thought of himself as a world renowned traveler. He was born, raised, lived and worked all within a 3 mile radius. He joked that his true love moved to Oconto in that 3 mile radius, so it was meant to be. To all who knew and loved him, he told a great story, loved to joke around, and was a true artistic craftsman. His true joys were his family, hunting, collecting, genealogy and history, raising animals, gardening, finding a treasure at a garage sale, and old westerns, especially John Wayne. Spring was his favorite season because of his love of nature and all things becoming new again. To his family he will always be remembered as unselfish and often going without to give to others. He was a great host and always made sure there was some special treat and soda waiting for his grandkids. In August of 1968 he met his soul mate, Susan Lewis, in front of the Tommy Store on Main Street. They later married in Macon, MO on June 3, 1970. They went on to raise a wonderful family which includes their children, Robert and Mari “Muss” Reed, Paula and Jeff Gonnering, Billie “Budge” Reed (Barry Meyers), Amber Reed, and Kelly “Bugs” Reed (Wesley Cherry), and deeply cherished grandchildren, Ashley (Jimmy), Bobby (Hannah), Joseph, Abigail, Zachary “Moe”, Macie Jo, and Marshall, and one great grandson Ethan. He is further survived by his siblings, Barbara Moeller, James (Shirley) Reed, “Baby” Jane (Jeff) Larmay and Sue’s family; mother-in-law Marie Piontek, Gerald (Nancy) Lewis, Steven Lewis, Karen (Rick) Wenzel, Sarah (Chuck) Wenzel, Duane (Kim) Lewis and many loving nieces and nephews. He will be dearly remembered and sadly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Toots, brother Steve Reed, father-in-law Gerald Lewis and sister-in-law Leeann Maddix.

The family will receive relatives and friends at the Gallagher Funeral Home, Oconto, from 4 to 8 PM Monday, July 7, 2014. Visitation will continue on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 from 10 to 11 AM at United Methodist Church, Oconto. Funeral services will be conducted 11 AM Tuesday at the church with the Rev. Gerhardt Miller officiating. Burial will be at Brookside Cemetery. Online condolences may be expressed at www.gallagherfuneralhome.net.

Bob’s family wishes to thank the Bellin Cancer Team, especially Julie, Jeanie, Georgette and Dana; Donna from Oconto Hospital, and Unity Hospice, especially Julie and Ann.

“A good man chooses to do what’s right. He places importance on family. A good man changes the world by his own example. He shapes the lives of his children and grandchildren with the strength of his love.” Thank you Dad for being such a good man, for loving us strong and raising us right. We couldn’t have asked for a better husband, dad, and papa to lead our family. Your greatness will be with us forever.
