Obituary for Michael Eckes

Michael “Shorty” Francis Eckes passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on December 23, 2020 after a nearly three year battle with Stage IV cancer. Mike was born January 29, 1946 in Oconto to the late Art and Helen (Wietor)Eckes. He was a 1964 graduate of Oconto High School, where he competed successfully in wrestling and football. Mike met the love of his life, Kristan M. Krueger, at St. Peter’s school. They started dating in the 8th grade and they married on June 19, 1967 at St. Peter’s church in Oconto. Together, they raised their 3 children in their hometown of Oconto. Mike served in the U.S. Navy as Petty Officer 1st Class during 1964-1968. He returned home and worked at Proctor & Gamble until his retirement in 1998. Mike loved his family, fishing, hunting, trapping, watching football, basketball and baseball games and playing cards with the boys at the Riverside and the Liquid Supply House.

Mike is survived by his wife of 53 years, Kristan, their children, James (Donna) Eckes of Lena, Lonny (Kelly Courtois) Eckes and Nick Eckes of Oconto; grandchildren, Emily Coopman (Ben Hoffman), Green Bay, Noah Eckes, Oconto, Braden Eckes, Lena, Brody Eckes, Marinette, Madeline Eckes, Florida, and Kenadie Eckes, Oconto. He is further survived by his siblings Dorothy (Eugene) Walls, Jerome Eckes, Janey (Rodger) Thome, Susie (Steve) Aubry, Jeff (Tracey) Eckes, many nieces and nephews, cousins and his “fishing buddy” Butch Rouer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Art and Jane Eckes and Helen Eckes and John Van Hulle. He will be welcomed into heaven by his granddaughter, Rylie Eckes. He is further preceded in death by his sister, Shirley, his brother, James, mother-in-law and father-in-law, Julia and Herb Krueger, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Clare and Wally Helnik, nephew, Jim Helnik, and sister-in -law, Mary Jane Eckes.
