Melvin G. Bartels, 71, of Abrams, passed away Friday, August 27, 2010 at Community Memorial Hospital, Oconto Falls. Melvin was born April 3, 1939 in Oconto to the late Lloyd and Beatrice (Rowell) Bartels. He married Audean Werth on October 7, 1961. She preceded him in death on May 19. 1997. He married Peggy Jean Naparella on January 5, 2005. She preceded him in death on July 2, 2010. Right out of high school Melvin worked at Bakes Garage. He then served in the Army National Guard for over four years. Melvin hauled milk for Bill Moody and Larry Vandenlangenberg. Melvin worked for Northwest Engineering for over 25 years. He also worked at VNS Machine for 8 years, Burns Security for 5 years and at the Commission on Aging. Melvin was a member of the First American Lutheran Church, Oconto, Abrams Volunteer Fire Department and the Marshall Lake Lunkers.
Melvin is survived by a son Russell Bartels, Abrams; mother-in-law Liz Duket, Oconto; three sisters Judith (Darrell) Heimke, Abrams; Dolores (Harvey) Bloom, Brookside; Carol (Raymond) Lentz, Abrams; a brother Lloyd (Elaine) Bartels, Abrams; two sisters-in-law Joyce Stoegbauer, Oconto; Leanne (Bob) Krueger, Oshkosh; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by two brothers Allen Bartels, Patrick Stoegbauer, a sister, Beverly Bartels, mother and father-in-law Herman and Gladys Werth, father-in-law Elmer "Duke" Duket, two brothers-in-law Russell and Boyd Werth and a niece Nancy Jo Bartels.
The family will be receive relatives and friends at the Gallagher Funeral Home, Oconto, from 4 to 8 PM Wednesday, September 1, 2010. Funeral services will be conducted 8 PM Wednesday, at the funeral home with the Rev. Frederik Schulz officiating. Burial will be at Valhalla Memorial Park, Milwaukee, 11 AM Thursday, September 2, 2010. On line condolences may be expressed at www.gallagherfuneralhome.net.
