Obituary for Matthew Pagel

Matthew William Pagel, 25, Abrams, died unexpectedly, in an auto accidnet, while on his way to Ohio, pursuing his dream of playing football on Wednesday, February 7, 2007. Matt was born August 10, 1981 in Green Bay to Roger and Bonnie (Ausloos) Pagel. Matt graduated from Oconto High School in 2000 and then went on to UW LaCrosse, where he received a Bachelor degree in Fitness Exercise and Sport Science with a Minor in Concentration Strengthening and Conditioning. Matt signed a free agent contract with the San Diego Charges, then to a one year stint with the Green Bay Blizzard of arena football 2 in 2006, he then was going to play for the Columbus Destroyers AFL1 football team. Pagel, who was a Press-Gazette second-team all-area selection in 1999, ranks seventh in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference history in career kickoff return yardage. He rushed for 431 yards and nine touchdowns while playing at UW-La Crosse from 2001 to 2004 and also was a track and field standout at the school. Among his accomplishments, Matt was a member of the 2000 Shrine Bowl Game, he clocked the fastest 55-meter time in WIAC history in 2004 at 6.32 seconds, which broke a mark set by former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Bill Schroeder. He also was part of the 400-meter relay team that won gold at the 2004 NCAA Division III national championships and was a 5 time All American in track. Matt worked for Anytime Fitness as a physical trainer in Green Bay, Appleton, and Neenah. Matt is survived by his parents Roger and Bonnie Pagel, Abrams; two brothers Brad (Megan) Pagel, Wausau; Chad (Jami) Pagel, Oconto Falls; Paternal grandfather Grant Pagel, six nieces and nephews Kurtis (God-son), Melissa and Kyle Pagel, and Gabriel, Madelin (God-daughter), and Deegan Pagel, God-Parents Brian Ausloos and Kellie Belongia, special friend Maria Munoz. He is preceded in death by paternal grandmother Sally Pagel and Maternal grandparents Melvin and Mary Ausloos. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Gallagher Funeral Home, Oconto, from 4 to 9 PM Sunday, February 11, 2007 with prayer services by Fr. Patrick Beno at 7 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 AM at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Oconto, with the Rev. Terry C. LaCombe officiating. Burial will be at the Oconto Catholic Cemetery. On line condolences may be expressed at www.gallagherfuneralhome.net. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established.
