Marrell James “MJ” Westcot, the “unofficial” Mayor of Brookside, and Historian of Pensaukee, Brookside and Abrams, was met with open arms by his parents and brothers on August 24th, 2013. He was born October 11, 1935, the first of three boys to the late Orville and Frances (Hellmann) Westcot. He graduated from Oconto Falls High School in 1953. He then attended the Agriculture Short Course at UW-Madison. He joined the Wisconsin National Guard in 1954 and was honorably discharged in 1960, with the rank of Sergeant First Class. After a long working career, he retired June 4, 1998. Marrell was a member of the Pensaukee Volunteer Fire Department, which he helped found in 1974. During this time he held many offices and helped with the picnics and money raising events they held. He was also a member of the American Legion Machickanee Post 523 from Abrams and was currently working on the committee for the Town of Pensaukee Rural Schools Reunion. He always looked forward to the great camping excursions with the Benders, Allens and Johnsons. On January 23, 1976 he married Kathy Edlebeck and they resided in Abrams their entire married life. Marrell is survived by his wife Kathy and three children, Debra (Mike) Price, Abrams; Teri (Randy) Peterson, Peshtigo; Todd Westcot, Abrams; five grandchildren, Mike (Juli) Hanson, Jake Warren, Jared Bergh, J.J. Price, and Janae Price; two great granddaughters, Falicity and Skylianne Hanson and two great grandsons, Mason Doberstein and Braxtyn Price. Also surviving are his brother Keith’s children; Faye (Will) Wallus, Steven (Tara) Westcot, Roxy (Jordan) Running, and Owen Westcot, two great nephews, Ethan Westcot and Cameron Wallus, and his Uncle Earl and Aunt Ruth Hellmann. Also two godchildren, Rick Erdmann and Emily Smithback, numerous cousins, friends and the morning coffee crew at Brookside Shell and Abrams McDonalds, where they drank a lot of coffee and solved the world’s problems. He is preceded in death by his parents Orville in May 1959 and Frances in February 1997, his brothers Clair and Keith, Keith’s wife Brenda, paternal grandparents John “Fred” and Lillian Westcot, maternal grandparents John and Rose Hellmann, two great granddaughters Connie and Karalynn, father and mother-in-law George and Violet Edlebeck, and his coffee buddy Norm. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Gallagher Funeral Home, Oconto, from 12 Noon to 3 PM Thursday, August 29, 2013. Funeral services will be conducted 3 PM Thursday at the funeral home with Brother Roman Sleger officiating. Burial will be at Brookside Cemetery.
