each stage of the grieving process.
Marceil Schumacher, 102, Oconto, passed away July 28, 2017. Marceil was born July 23, 1915 in Oconto. She married Damian Schumacher Nov 25, 1937. Prior to World War II, they made their home in Oconto and she gave birth to her son, Damian. The family moved to Milwaukee in 1940 and lived there until the mid 1970’s, when they returned back to their hometown of Oconto.Marceil was true living history. Her Aunt Minnie Vendt was the housekeeper of the Holt Family for over 60 years. Mrs Holt would pick up Marceil as a schoolgirl in her electric car, which was restored and is now on display at The Beyer Home Museum. She could recite names and events that have taken place in Oconto throughout the past 100 years, and has a copy of the Oconto City Directory from her birth year, 1915, detailing the many companies in business in her prosperous hometown. She was interviewed by David Retzlaff , providing details about the Stanley Toy Factory fire and destruction of the Schumacher Furniture store for his book.Marceil was an avid Seamstress, and learned to drive at the insistence of her son when she was in her 50’s. She typed the Thesis for her son’s Marquette University and Stanford University Degrees, and those of his friends. Marceil and her husband were the Caretakers of The Oconto Motel when they moved back from Milwaukee. She worked on Election polls in Milwaukee, and loved her “Church Family” at First American Lutheran Church in Oconto. When macular degeneration robbed her of her eyesight, she listened to books on tape, and insisted on doing the laundry and washing all of the dishes. She lived in her home thanks to the help of her son until age 98 on Jackson Street in Oconto. On her 100th Birthday in 2015, she received a Proclamation from the then-Mayor of Oconto, Victoria Bostedt, and had a fabulous birthday party with family and friends.
She is survived by her son Damian and his Fiancée Cynthia Patterson, grand-children Shannon & Damian Schumacher, and Joan Stapelfeldt, and great-grand-Children Damian, Logan & Kayden, all of Houston Texas, Nieces Patricia Vendt of Dayton Ohio, Carol Vendt of Oconto, and Nephew David Vendt (Mary Hart) of Lebanon OH.
