Obituary for Mabel A. (Routheau) Helmer

Mabel A. (Routheau) Helmer, Oconto, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at Woodlands of Oconto one day short of her 96th birthday. Mabel was born in the town of Little River to the late John and Louise (Cota) DeHut on April 4, 1917. Mabel married Clair Routheau on December 19, 1936. He preceded her in death on September 19, 1964. She later married John Helmer on February 19, 1977. He preceded her in death on October 24, 2002. Mabel worked at several jobs over the years to support her children, but was most happy spending time with her family, and enjoying showing off her flowers and garden. She also enjoyed fishing whenever she had the chance. She was an excellent cook, and made sure that each of her children had their favorite pie available when they visited. She enjoyed shopping trips and flea markets, always excited to find that special treasure to show the family. Mabel is survived by two sons, Rodney Routheau and children Michael Routheau, Kristine (Tom) Smith, and Brett Routheau; Clark (Julie) Routheau and children Jenny (Travis) Shufelt, and Samantha (fiancé Dustin Boucher); two daughters, Karen (Jim) Konop; and Penny (Roger) Aubut and children Lance, and Kim (Tim) LaPlant; as well as grandchildren, great grandchildren and step grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends. Also surviving is her sister, Eleanor Mraz, Oconto. She was preceded in death by six brothers, Lyle, George, Harry, Ray, Roy and Donald; and five sisters, Irene Ragen, Muriel Olson, Ruby Lasley, Louise Scharmann and Mary Sief. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Gallagher Funeral Home, Oconto, from 10 AM to 12 Noon Friday, April 5, 2013. Funeral services will be conducted 12 Noon Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Gerhardt Miller officiating. Online condolences may be expressed at www.gallagherfuneralhome.net. Mabel’s family would like to give a heartfelt thank you to the nurses and staff at Woodlands Oconto, for the wonderful care and compassion given to her, especially Shirley. The family would also like to extend special thanks to Clark for being Mom’s caregiver for the past 16 years. His dedication is deeply appreciated. In lieu of flowers, donations will be made to the Oconto Humane Society as well as other local organizations.
