Obituary for Lorraine J. Garvey

Lorraine June (Steckmesser) Garvey passed away on November 29, 2018 in Oconto, Wisconsin. Lorraine was born on June 24, 1927 in Manitowoc, Wisconsin to Kurt and Anita (Koenig) Steckmesser. She married her true love Glenn Garvey on a very cold and snowy January 29, 1949, in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. After 65 years of marriage, Glenn preceded her in death on August 24, 2014. Lorraine will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. We will all remember her beautiful smile. Lorraine believed in volunteerism and participated in many organizations. She was a member of Holy Trinity Parish, St. Anne’s Society, Friends of the Library and a member and past president of both the Oconto Women’s Club and St. Vincent DePaul Society. Lorraine was a Cub Scout den mother, Girl Scout and 4H leader who loved sewing, quilting, crocheting, gardening, biking, cross country skiing and bird watching. Lorraine was a voracious reader and instilled in her children and grandchildren the importance and value of an education. She taught for many years with the Title I Program in the Oconto School System.

Lorraine is survived and will be greatly missed by her four children: Shawn (Peggy) Garvey of Oregon, Wisconsin; Dennis (Kathy) Garvey of Portland, Oregon; Lynn (Steve) LeBreck of Cape Coral, Florida and Paul (Jacci) Garvey of Suamico, Wisconsin; six grandchildren: Leif (Samantha) Soreide of Davie, Florida; Michael Garvey of Seattle, Washington; Lars (Lani) Soreide of Pompano Beach, Florida; Brian (Marianna) Garvey of Portland, Oregon; Megan Garvey of Portland, Oregon; and Caitlin Garvey of Madison, Wisconsin and six great-grandchildren: Landon, Ryan, Catherine, Johanna, Liv and Caroline. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law Roy (Martha) Steckmesser, of Panama City Beach, Florida; many nieces and nephews, and her lifelong friends Carol and Jerry Finn of Oconto.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Oconto, from 10 to 11 AM Thursday, December 6, 2018. Memorial Mass will be celebrated 11 AM Thursday at the church with the Rev. Joel Sember officiating. Burial will be at Oconto Catholic Cemetery. Online condolences may be expressed at www.gallagherfuneralhome.net.

Lorraine’s family would like to thank those who visited and spent time with our mother in her final years. We would especially like to thank Father Joel Sember, Kathy Schroeder, and her loving caregivers: Joanie Hubacher and the staff of Care Partners, Heartland Hospice, Kathy Frease and Peggy Hazen.
