LaVerne Hilair (Gauthier) Sherman, 91, of Oconto, passed away August 23, 2010 at Valhaven Care Center, Neenah, WI. LaVerne was born May 12, 1919 in Oconto to Charles and Viola (Mareks) Gauthier. She married Bernard Sherman on October 25, 1939. He preceded her in death on July 20, 2006. LaVerne worked at the Bond Pickle Factory for many years. Most of her time was spent raising her 6 wonderful children. After Bernard retired they enjoyed snowmobiling together and with friends.
LaVerne is survived by two sons, Francis (Chris) Sherman, Green Bay; Jim (Madalene) Sherman, Menominee Falls. Four daughters, Joyce Brown and friend (John Wallace), Englewood, CO; Sharon (Jim) Young, Neenah; Marie Knippel and friend (Tim Heipel), Milwaukee; Jan Behnke and friend (Jerry Lade), Green Bay. Two sisters, Sister Mary jean Gauthier, Green Bay; Ione Wanner, Oconto; a sister-in-law, Marjorie Van Hefty and a brother-in-law, Edward (Pat) Sherman. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren, 9 step-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by two sisters, Carol (Gauthier) Shallow and Mabelle (Gauthier) Kirchner and one grandchild, Ken Bostedt.
The family will receive relatives and friends at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Oconto, from 9 to 11 AM Thursday, August 26, 2010. Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated 11 AM Thursday at the church with the Rev. Bob Karuhn officiating. Burial will be at the Oconto Catholic Cemetery. The Gallagher Funeral Home, Oconto, is assisting the family. On line condolences may be expressed at www.gallagherfuneralhome.net.
The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff at Valhaven Care center in Neenah and the kids would like to express a special thank you to their sister, Sharon Young for helping Ma through her last years.
