Obituary for John Walter Zima

John Walter Zima, 94, of Brookside, passed away Friday, June 10, 2011, just hours shy of 96th birthday, at Sharpe Care Ltd. Oconto Falls. John was born June 11, 1915 in Krakow to the late Martin and Katherine (Sroka) Zima. He married Evelyn Rowell on March 22, 1941, and just recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. He spent his childhood on a farm in Krakow with his 10 brothers and sisters. In 1940 John moved to Milwaukee to work. John was drafted in June 1943 and attended the "Army Air Force Technical School" in Amarillo, Texas, before being assigned to Agra, India serving with the 3rd Air Depot, 3rd Repair Squadron as an airplane and engine mechanic, where he served until February 1946. Upon returning to the Pulaski area he tried farming, but that was not his calling, so in 1947 he purchased the garage in Brookside and found his real interest. He and Evelyn operated Zimas Garage and Implement until his retirement in 1980. John was active at the Brookside Community Center, was a member of the Small Business Association, and received a Rural Urban Award. After selling the garage he didnt really retire, just moved his interest down the road to his shop. He continued to repair and "putz" until his eyesight failed. John was a member of the Abrams American Legion Post #523 and a member of the United Methodist Church of Abrams, until it closed, then became a member of the Oconto United Methodist Church.

John is survived by his wife of 70 years Evelyn Zima; a daughter Kathryn "Renny" (Richard) Stein; two grandchildren Sara (Jerry) Arndt and DeAnne (Brennan) Wyatt, and four great grandchildren, Jayden and Jacob Arndt and Maxwell and Zoe Wyatt; two sisters-in-law Claudine Zima; Eleanor Zima . He was preceded in death by five sisters Mary Gurke, Margaret Jagodzinski, Regina Pawelczyk, Helen Demeny Judy Karolczyk and five brothers Joseph, Anton, Frank, Stanley and Casimir Zima.
The family will receive relatives and friends at the United Methodist Church, Oconto, from 9:30 to 11 AM Thursday, June 16, 2011. Funeral services will be conducted 11 AM Thursday at the church with the Rev. Gerhardt Miller and Rev. Frederik Schulz officiating. Burial will be at the Brookside Cemetery with Military Rites by Abrams American Legion Post #523. The Gallagher Funeral Home, Oconto, is assisting the family.
