Obituary for Joan M. Westenberg

Joan M. Westenberg passed away Sunday, June 6, 2021. Those who were blessed to know Joan would agree that the world is a better place because of her. Joan was born on June 23, 1936 in Racine to Carl and Helen (Thompsen) Loewecke. She was the oldest of seven children and learned work and responsibility at an early age. She grew up cooking, baking and taking care of others, traits that would always be a part of her. The fateful night when Joan met Larry they were both on dates with someone else, but there was an instant connection. Before the end of the evening they had exchanged information and made plans to see each other. That first night they both felt they were meant to be together, and so they were. On January 11, 1957 she married Larry, her soul-mate and love of her life. Their love quickly brought children and a desire for country life. During the summer 1969 the two packed up their family of four boys, left Racine and moved north, eventually settling outside Oconto on a small family farm. Joan’s life was enveloped in shepherding and caring for her family; displaying her love through cooking, baking, canning and the many hundreds of tasks that go with raising four boys and a husband. Her kitchen was the center of family life – it was the place that faith was grown and practiced, problems solved, life’s challenges and joys shared, and love lived out. Joan’s reach extended beyond her expanding family and out into the community through her work in the kitchens of area hospitals and nursing homes. A woman of deep faith, she was always willing to share what she had or what she could bake for any event. She gave of herself freely, and always with a smile. Her faith community at Holy Trinity was central to her and sustained her over the years. She loved volunteering at church and at the food pantry. Her later years brought more than her share of health challenges, but she never complained.Joan is survived by her four sons; Larry (Ginny) Westenberg, Michael (Ann) Westenberg, David (Cindy) Westenberg, and Steve (Debbie) Westenberg; brother and sisters Gene (Dianne) Loewecke, Joyce (Peter) Ernster, Ruth (Tom) Smrz, Judy Witon, and Marcia (Tim) Duquaine. She was blessed with ten grandchildren – Liz (fiancé Clint Henning) Westenberg, Ben (Carla Pearce) Westenberg, Becca (Brad) Shinnick, Rachel Westenberg, Joseph Westenberg, Christy (Justin) Olson, David Westenberg, Kelsey (Scott) Reynolds, Zach (fiancé Janki Patel) Westenberg, and Alayna Westenberg – and six great-grandchildren; Gabby, Riley, Addison Dorbeck; Reid and Sage Reynolds; and Baby Shinnick, who is due on Joan’s birthday. Joan was preceded in death by her husband Larry, her sister and brother-in-law Carol and Ed Vesely; her father, Carl and her mother, Helen.
The family will receive friends and relatives Friday, June 11 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Oconto from 10 am till noon. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 pm, with the Rev. Francis Nusi officiating. She will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband Larry at Oconto Catholic Cemetery immediately following mass.
