Janice Faye Mary Detaeje Janssen, age 89, passed away after a short illness, on Sunday, Sept.4, 2022 at Theda Care Medical Center-Appleton. She was living, the last four years with her son and daughter-in-law, Joel and Lisa, and their sons Cody and Dallas in Kaukauna. She was born on Sept 17, 1932, in Oconto, WI, to Joseph Peter and Viola Lilian (Ristow) Detaeje Sr. She lived on the family farm at Couillardville along the Oconto River. She attended Couillardville School from the age of four and graduated in 1945. Janice was very active in the Couillardville 4-H Club as a member and a junior leader. Her projects included food preservation, foods and nutrition and gardening. She won many awards at the Oconto County Fair and the Wisconsin State Fair. She then attended Oconto High School and graduated in 1949. She was editor of the Hi-Crier, the Oconto High School Newspaper. She received a scholarship to Oshkosh State Teachers College, where she pursued a diploma in Elementary Education. In 1951 she began her teaching career at Couillardville School. When Gail had health problems they moved to Madison where Gail attended UW-Madison and Janice was principal and taught the upper grades in schools in West and East Dane County. After Gail’s graduation they moved to West Bend where Janice continued teaching. From West Bend Gail and Janice moved to Kaukauna where Janice continued her teaching career in the public and parochial schools and religious education programs. She tutored many students during her lifetime and her love of learning seemed to brush off on them, as adults they recalled their experiences. Janice was an avid reader, writer and rememberer from early in life until her passing. Janice enjoyed watching the Packers, Badgers and Virginia Cavaliers until the time of her passing. She and Gail were season ticket holders to the Green Bay Packers, attending numerous games and entertaining in the box they hosted. Gail and Janice enjoyed many winters at their home in Sun City West, AZ on the 16th hole of Deer Valley Golf Course. Janice was very active in the Kaukauna Community Health Associates (formally the Kaukauna Hospital Auxiliary). She chaired several committees and was a past president. In 2017 Janice received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Kaukauna Service Organization for dedicating a lifetime to helping others and contributing the most as an individual to her community.
