He served as the vice chairman of the Milwaukee District of the Lutheran Pioneers for two years. He also served as the chairman of the Milwaukee District of the Lutheran Pioneers resigning in 1976. He was the chairman of the National Lutheran Pioneer Convention in 1973. He also helped to establish the Lutheran Pioneer Campground on the Onion River in Waldo. He also worked for KCS International for 13 years. He turned his love of woodworking into a new career after moving to Oconto in 1976. For a total of 15 years working at Packer land Woodworking in Peshtigo and Associated Fixtures in Oconto he worked on the custom cabinets and fixtures for many courthouses, restaurants, and hospitals in the Chicago area. That love also allowed him to make many clocks, cabinets, and the cradle used by his children and grandchildren. Throughout the years he has passed much of that woodworking knowledge onto his sons for them to use forever. He enjoyed hunting fishing, loving the outdoors and spending time with his sons. He also enjoyed music and learned to play the dulcimer to understand it, before constructing them himself. He also had a life long love of reading. He spent many afternoons with a good book. He enjoyed spending time with his wife Kathi, watching birds and training their dogs. They passed the afternoons of retirement talking and remembering. He was a member of the following Wisconsin Synod Lutheran Churches respectively: Divinity Divine Charity of Milwaukee, St. John?s on Forest Home of Milwaukee, Zion Lutheran of Peshtigo, St. John?s of Grover, and Our Savior of Lena. James is survived by his wife Kathleen, Oconto; two sons Corey Clarke, Green Bay; Shawn (Isabell) Clarke, Oak Creek; four grandchildren Ashley, Cody, Nicholas, and Benjamin. Also survived by two brothers Duane (Barbara) Clarke, Menominee, MI; and Steve Clarke, Madison.
