John “Jack” Lewis Maas, 80, Oconto, was rewarded with eternal life on Saturday, October 17, 2015 with family by his side, after a courageous battle with cancer. Jack was born October 7, 1935 in Warrens, WI to the late Theodore and Blanche (Allen) Maas. He married Catherine Follett at Zion Lutheran Church in Oconto on May 2, 1981. Jack served in the U.S. Army from January, 1953 to February, 1963. He was called to active duty October, 1961. Jack was an extreme advocate for the City of Oconto and served on the City Council for 36 years. His hobbies included golfing, hunting, fishing, tinkering on his army jeep and fixing up old lawn mowers. Jack was a member of Oconto Gospel Chapel, Oconto American Legion Post #74 and Oconto Elks.
Jack was a very spiritual man who loved his family deeply. He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Cathy Maas; children, Becky (Ken) Dolata, John (Donna) Maas, Lisa (James) Mongin, Jane (Myron) Crawford, and Jody (Rob) Vandenbush. Grandchildren, Kyle (Michelle) Dworshok, Tad (Alyssa Matenaer) Dworshok, Justin (Jessica) Maas, Kaitlin (Sam) Meyers, Tyler Maas, Chloe, Trent and Addison Mongin; Quinn, Kacy Mae and Josiah Crawford; Abigail Karbon. Great-grandchildren, Marc Meyers and Riley Maas. He is further survived by a brother, Douglas Maas, many wonderful nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Jack was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Gray and a brother, Theodore Maas.
The family will receive relatives and friends at the Gallagher Funeral Home, Oconto, from 4 to 8 PM Wednesday, October 21, 2015. Visitation will continue on Thursday, October 22, from 10 to 11 AM at Oconto Gospel Chapel, Oconto. Funeral services will be conducted 11 AM Thursday at the church with the Rev. Peter Dorn officiating. Burial will be at the Evergreen Cemetery, with Military Rites by Oconto American Legion Post #74. Online condolences may be expressed at www.gallagherfuneralhome.net.
The family would like to thank Unity Hospice for the wonderful care extended to Jack during this time. A very special thank you to RN Julie Marquardt for her loving care and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for memorials to Unity Hospice and American Legion Post #74 in memory of Jack Maas.
