Irene W. Steinhaus, 99, of Green Bay, passed away on November 30, 2011, just a few weeks short of her 100th birthday. She was born December 24, 1911 in Oconto to the late James and Maude (Anderson) Cain. She was affectionately known to her siblings as Sissy. She married Clarence Steinhaus in 1929. He preceded her in death on December 31, 1992. Irene was a nurses’ aide at the Oconto Hospital and she especially enjoyed working in the maternity ward. Irene and her husband lived on the bay and seldom ate alone, especially in the summer time. The coffee was always on and there were always fresh baked goods in the house because Irene loved to bake. She enjoyed swimming, boating and working in her many flower gardens. It would not be unusual for Irene and her sisters to take the rowboat out and row joyfully up the creek, singing all afternoon. Seldom did a Saturday pass that she and her husband, Clarence, didn’t go out dining and dancing with friends. She looked forward to attending her ceramics class and took great pleasure in sharing all of her creations with her family. Irene and Clarence spent many winters in Florida. When Clarence passed away, Irene spent her winters in Florida with her granddaughter, Cassandra and her husband, Alan. In Florida, she enjoyed going to plays, Disney World, the beach, and shopping. Irene is survived by two daughters Patricia (Francis) McDougal, Green Bay; Cynthia Steinhaus, FL; a son Richard (Sue) Steinhaus, Athelstane; two brothers John (Ethel) Cain, Maribel; Clarence Cain, Green Bay; a sister-in-law Margaret Cain, Oconto; fourteen grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Irene was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers Harold, Robert and Orville Cain, two sisters Charlotte Kelm and Ida Mae Wicks, sister-in-law Darlene Cain, a son William Steinhaus, grandson Dr. Kevin McDougal, and great grandson Michael Steinhaus Jr. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Gallagher Funeral Home, Oconto, from 10 AM to 12:30 PM Saturday, December 3rd. Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church at 1 PM Saturday, December 3rd with Rev. Bob Karuhn officiating. Burial will be at the Oconto Catholic Cemetery. Online condolences may be expressed at www.gallagherfuneralhome.net. We would like to thank all of those at Manor Care East who were kind to Irene during her stay. We would especially like to thank Jody and Sondra from Southern Care for their kindness and compassion. Good night, Irene; good night, Irene. I’ll see you in my dreams...
