Obituary for Genevieve Mary Lane

Genevieve M. Lane, 89, of Oconto, passed away Friday, November 21, 2014 at Woodland Village of Oconto. She was born in Spruce, WI, to the late John and Adolphine Neta. She married James Lane September 27, 1947 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Spruce. He preceded her in death May 17, 2000.

Genevieve is survived by eight children: Carol Lane Azeez, Kennebunk ME; Thomas (Dawn) Lane, Hudson; John (Barbara Haen) Lane, Waupaca; Steven (Mary) Lane, Plover; Jeffrey (Gail) Lane, Waukesha; Patty (Peter) Gabrielson, Oconto; Nancy Copeland, Oconto; Susan (Steven) Konsuvo, Morristown, NJ. She is survived by sixteen grandchildren: Kathryn Azeez, Lauren (Andrew) Jolly, Darin Lane, Andrew, Lane, Anna Lane, Laura Dawn Lane, George (Stefanie) Lane, Brian Lane, David Lane, James Lane, Kym Belongia, Keith (Angelina) Belongia, Morgan Copeland, Charles Copeland, Max Copeland, and Claire Copeland. Three great grandchildren: Dylan Lane, Sloan and Lincoln Belongia. Also, four step-grandchildren: Seth Hornung, Jordan Hornung, Johanna (Paul) O’Connor, Josh (Christy) Gabrielson, and three step-great grandchildren: Mali, Cal and Olivia. She is further survived by her only sibling, Cecilia McTavish, Rothschild, and a special family friend, Martha Pawlak, Crivitz, and other relatives and friends.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her mother, Adolphine Neta, in 1939, and her father, John Neta, in 1966.

She graduated from Lena High School in 1942 and came to Oconto in January, 1943 to work as a secretary in the Oconto County Extension Office. After her marriage, she helped her husband in their business, Lane School Bus Service, doing bookkeeping and driving various station wagon routes throughout the years. After 40 years, they sold their business and enjoyed 14 years of retirement together.

Gen was a life-long member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, and a member of the St. Anne’s Society. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 74, Oconto, since 1948. She held many offices, including past president of the Unit, secretary, press correspondent, and historian. She was a former member of the Oconto Golf Club, playing her first game in 1943, and her last in 2006, and had a hole-in-one on August 10, 1982. She enjoyed playing bridge, and the many bridge friends she had over the years. She loved taking care of her home and family, and enjoyed sewing for her daughters. The family gatherings at holidays and the summer reunions were special to her. She was a “record keeper” and enjoyed writing and keeping the family history, and always had a camera readily available.

Friends may call at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Oconto, from 9 to 12 Noon, Tuesday, November 25, 2014, with St. Anne’s Rosary at 8:30 A.M. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 Noon with the Rev. Patrick Beno officiating. Burial will be at the Oconto Catholic Cemetery.
