Obituary for Florence Zantow

Florence Goodearle Zantow, 90, of Oconto, passed away Sunday, March 18, 2012 at Woodlands of Oconto. Florence was born June 26, 1921 in Baraboo to the late George and Bessie Florence (Bates) Goodearle. She married Dr. Forrest E. Zantow on February 1, 1943. He preceded her in death on February 12, 1979. Florence lived a life of faith and creativity. Sketching from an early age she graduated from UW Madison with a degree in art. She married in 1943 before her husband was sent to England and soon the Normandy invasion. After the war she raised six children while being active in community activities; art clubs, theater productions, library and 4-H. Her long association with First Presbyterian Church included the choir and teaching Sunday School. Nature was always a love of hers and she would get outside commenting on trees and birds often. Hosting a pair of Foreign Exchange Students from a family in Colombia led to learning Spanish and trips to Latin America. She always shared her love of art with the community and that included a stint as an art teacher in the Oconto School System. With her husband she attended countless school band concerts, symphonic performances and theater productions. Following her husband's death, she ran the Paint Box, an arts and crafts store in Oconto and worked as a photographer for the Oconto County Reporter. In her 70's she made a trip to Bolivia as part of Habitat for Humanity and climbed to the Incan Macu Pichu. Well into her late 80's she read voraciously and was active with a long-term book club. Florence is survived by a daughter Margaret Bredeson, Beloit; five sons Peter “Jack” (Leslie) Zantow, Cambria; Richard (Lynn) Zantow, Charlottesville, VA; William Zantow, Green Bay; Thomas (Jennifer) Zantow, Midland, MI; John (Leigh) Zantow, Boone, IA; ten grandchildren six great grandchildren and a special friend Rose Marie Lake, Oconto. She was preceded in death by a brother George Goodearle and a sister Alice Fuchs. The family will receive relatives and friends at the First Presbyterian Church, Oconto, from 9:30 to 11 AM Saturday, March 24, 2012. Funeral service will be conducted 11 AM Saturday at the church with the Rev. Craig Alwin officiating. The Gallagher Funeral Home, Oconto, is assisting the family.
