Evelyn L. Zima, 94, passed away peacefully New Years Day. Evelyn was born November 28, 1918 in Abrams to the late Hiram Delmar and Louisa (Boldt) Rowell. She attended school in Abrams and remained in the area all her life. Evelyn met John Zima at a dance n Krakow and three years later on March 22, 1941 they eloped to Des Moines, Iowa. Upon John’s return from WWII, they purchased the garage in Brookside. Evelyn managed the office and did the bookkeeping for their business, Zima’s Garage & Implement, for over 35 years even though she never had the opportunity for a formal high school education. John preceded her in death in June of 2011. Evelyn was an avid bowler and golfer for many years. She also enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing, and crafted many items for her daughter and granddaughters. Quilting became her passion several years ago, and she made a quilt for everyone in her family. (Teasingly, John would ask why anyone would cut up a perfectly good pieces of material and then take all that time to sew it back together again.) Evelyn was an active and faithful member of the Abrams United Methodist Church until its closure. She served on numerous church committees, helped with fund-raising dinners, taught Sunday school, and served as treasurer of the church and the United Methodist Women’s group. She was also a member of American Legion Auxiliary. Evelyn is survived by a daughter, Kathryn “Renny” (Richard) Stein, Little Suamico; two grandchildren Sara (Jerry) Arndt, DeAnne (Brennan) Wyatt; and four great-grandchildren, who always brought a smile to her face, Jayden and Jacob Arndt and Max and Zoe Wyatt. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Alma Rowell and Joyce Rowell. She was preceded in death by two sisters Violet Geske, Ethel Northcutt, and four brothers, Lavern “Tom”, Harvey, Ambrose “Jim” Rowell and Royal Hannon. The family will receive relatives and friends at the United Methodist Church, Oconto, from 9 to 11 AM Saturday, January 5, 2012. Funeral services will be conducted 11 AM Saturday at the Church with the Rev. Gerhardt Miller and Rev. Frederik Schulz officiating. Burial will be at the Brookside Cemetery. The Gallagher Funeral Home, Oconto, is assisting the family. Online condolences may be expressed at www.gallagherfuneralhome.net. The family would like to extend a heart-felt thank you to the nurses and staff at Sharpe Care for their care and compassion shown to Evelyn. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Alzheimer Foundation or Oconto United Methodist Church, Oconto.
