GRIEF & HEALING
affirmations to uplift & help you through
each stage of the grieving process.
Ernest R. Schroder, age 99, passed into eternal life on May 8, 2016. He was born December 6, 1916, the youngest son of Olaf and Maren Schroder, in Cadott, Wisconsin. He graduated from Cadott High School in 1934, Superior State Teachers College in 1938, and received his M.A. degree from U.W. Superior in 1953. He married Helen “Honey” Olson June 25, 1949, at the First Presbyterian Church in Oconto. They are the parents of two sons, John Olaf and Norman Ernest. His first teaching position was at Cable High School in Cable, Wisconsin, from 1938 to 1942. Ernie enlisted in the U.S. Army on May 13, 1942, and served in the Pacific Theatre as Staff Sergeant in Company M, 43rd Division, 103rd Infantry Regiment, until his discharge October 16, 1945. Ernie received the Bronze Star. He returned to teach at Cable, then came to Oconto High School in 1948, as U.S. History and Social Problems teacher. In 1957 he became principal, and in 1959 was Oconto High School’s first guidance counselor. He retired as guidance director on June 13, 1980. Ernie was a member (67 years) of the American Legion Jones-Modrow-Young Post of Oconto; a charter member of the Tri-County Guidance Counselors; a member and former president of the Oconto Education Association; lifetime member of National Education Association, and on the State Guidance Committee. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Oconto, and served on the Board of Trustees. Ernie enjoyed his retirement years as he and Honey spent winters at Panama City Beach, Florida and summers at Archibald Lake, Lakewood, WI. Family life was very important to him, and he had great pride in his family. It was always a pleasure for him to meet his former students, and hear of their lives beyond high school; still as “Mr. Schroder” to most of them. Summer class reunions were special evenings. His card club, with friends, was an event he looked forward to. Many pinochle games were played at the Schroder home. Ernie could always find time to enjoy the beauties of nature, especially the sunsets. He went deer hunting with family and friends through his 86th year, and also spent many hours fishing on the Bay and the Pike River at Amberg.
Survivors are his wife Helen “Honey”; sons Dr. John (Jody) of Colgate, WI, and Dr. Norman (Barbara) of Pocatello, Idaho; grandchildren Jennifer of Bozeman, Montana; Johnny, Wauwatosa, WI; Jannelle and Julia of Colgate; nieces and nephews, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Bergliot (George) Bonneville, and Lily (Gene) Isom; brothers Arthur (Magdalyn) and Norman (Elaine); mother and father-in-law Ada (Telford) and John Olson; sister and brother-in-law Elinore and Will Rugg.
The family will receive relatives and friends at the Gallagher Funeral Home, Oconto, from 4 to 8 PM Wednesday, May 11, 2016. Visitation will continue on Thursday, May 12, from 1 to 2 PM at the First Presbyterian Church, Oconto. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 PM at the church with the Rev. Craig Alwin officiating.
