Obituary for Edward Patrick Young

A most gentle man has entered the gates of heaven into the arms of Jesus on January 2, 2013. The earthly journey of Edward Patrick Young is now complete, leaving all who knew him a legacy of honesty, integrity, always willing and ever wanting to help others. Ed was born on December 10, 1942 in Oconto, Wisconsin, a town in which he dedicated himself to build on its goodness and beauty. He was a County Board Supervisor for 15 years, a City Council Alderperson for 19 years and planned to seek re-election this spring. Ed was looking forward to being the top vote-getter, as he was always humbled by how the community appreciated his service. He began his political interests as a school board member in 1987 serving for 13 years. His willingness and knowledgeable ability were applied no matter how simple or complicated the task. Dad found a way to make it work out, he would always say 'there is an easy way and a hard way, but it can be done.' Of Ed’s many accomplishments and dedication his most heartfelt was being the cherished husband of 44 wonderful years, a wonderful Dad and Papa to his created family, always kind and considerate of everyone’s needs. A loving son and brother and 'special Uncle Ed' to all of his nieces and nephew; a devoted godfather to Katie and Alli and a special friend to many. He attended St. Joseph’s grade school, Oconto High School, and joined the United States Army in 1964 for 3 years while stationed in Germany, and completed his education at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He returned to Oconto as our accomplished draftsman at Holt Hi Lab before joining FMC in Green Bay, ending his career with Foth and Van Dyke following the debilitating disease of Guillian Barre’ Syndrome being diagnosed on April 8, 1989. After four months on a respirator and three additional months in rehabilitation, Dad was welcomed home with a police escort in a limousine to TV cameras, the Oconto High School Band, and many friends and family waiting to help him up the new ramp built by the students and staff of Oconto High School. Leading by example Dad taught us to always give back. He became involved in the Volunteer In Probation Program at its inception over twenty years ago by helping many patrons through their decisions and on to goodness in life. He was a Hunter Education instructor, a life member of the Oconto Sportsman Club, the American Legion, and the VFW. He mentored many children in reading, math, and science, each eager for a ride on his wheelchair in the gym during a rainy day. Ed is survived by his wife Joanne (LaCombe), beloved sons John (Mary) and Jim (Donna), cherished daughters Amy (Rory Cisar) and Anna (Jeremy Manzetti); grandchildren Ellis and Audrey Young, Annalise, Grace and Vynessa Cisar, and Dominic, Luke and Landon Young; brother Bill, sisters Mary Jo, Char, and Jean; sister-in-law Shirley Ernst, brother-in-law John (Anna) LaCombe, special aunts, uncles, cousins and many many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, his brother Gary and brother-in-law William (Bill) Ernst. We want to thank each and every one who said a prayer, sent a card, shared a hello or a kind thought of him as he continued with every day struggles, trials, hurdles over the past 23 years with GBS, a rare blood disease, and other complications due to his health status, accepting his difficulties and making the MOST of every day. Please share a smile, share a hello, open a door for someone, especially one with special needs. Always know that it feels good to them and your reward will be priceless. Dad, you will be so sadly missed and deeply remembered always and forever…..1 4 3 (I Love You).
