Douglas R. Ferdon Sr., 88, of Abrams, passed away Friday, February 18, 2011 at St. Marys Hospital, Green Bay. Douglas was born march 22, 1922 in Little Suamico to the late Floyd and Irene (King) Ferdon. He married Lillian Byng on September 8, 1941. She preceded him in death on July 17, 1995. Douglas served his Country in US Navy during WWII. He served from 1942 to 1944 at Corpus Christi, TX and 1944 to 1946 in Norfolk, VA. Douglas served as a Gunners Mate, teaching how to lead shoot. Douglas worked for Wheeler Cheese prior to and after his service time. He then worked for Schreiber Foods for over 33 years. One of Dougs few pleasures during the Depression was using his fathers train pass to ride the train to Chicago with a buddy and watch a Cubs games, and then return home all in the same day. Doug was a lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs. Doug and his son Dennis are engine people, together they built a go-cart, stockcar and an off road racing truck, and Doug never missed a race. Doug is survived by two sons Douglas (Sylvia) Ferdon Jr., Waco, TX; Dennis (Cindi) Ferdon, Abrams; a sister Jean Behnke, Milford, PA; a brother Floyd Ferdon Jr., Lt. Suamico; and three grandchildren Sarah, Brooke and Matt Ferdon. He was preceded in death by a brother-in-law Elmer Behnke.
The family will receive relatives and friends at the Gallagher Funeral Home, Oconto, from 5 to 9 PM Tuesday, February 22, 2011 with prayer services by Deacon Walter Kaszynski at 7 PM. Visitation will continue on Wednesday, February 23 at St. Patricks Catholic Church, Stiles, from 10 to 11 AM. Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated 11 AM Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Joel Sember officiating. Burial will be at the Brookside Cemetery with Military Rites by American Legion Post #523. On line condolences may be expressed at www.gallagherfuneralhome.net.
