“Dottie” Rice, 95, of Oconto, passed away Friday, September 7, 2012 at Woodland Village, Oconto. Beatrice Veronica Rice, the youngest child of Charles and Lena Thums, was born September 30, 1916 in Marshfield, WI. Named by her grandmothers, she was given the nickname “Dottie” by her father, from a character in a children’s book and that was the name she used and was known by. Dottie attended school in Loyal, WI and graduated from Loyal High School. She met and married her husband, Karl Rice, in Loyal, WI on November 28, 1935 - Thanksgiving Day. Karl passed away in 1994. They made homes and friends in Abbotsford, Seymour and Oconto, WI, during Karl’s teaching career. Dottie enjoyed being a homemaker and was a good cook and hostess. They enjoyed traveling to Florida, visiting family in Oregon and sightseeing along the way. Bridge was a past time. Cats were not pets, but friends who became fat and spoiled. Dottie is survived by a daughter, Suzanne, and her husband, Richard Gagan, and grandson, Dan. She is also survived by a son, Brian, and his wife, Rosemary; grandson, Nathan, his wife, Tina and great grandson, Gavin; a grandson, Mitchell and great grandson, Charlie; a great granddaughter, Mackenzie and special great granddaughter, Jaelyn. Dottie’s sister, Marcella Berry, and brothers, Earl and Verland Thums, preceded her in death. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Oconto, from 2 to 4 PM Monday, September 10, 2012. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 4 PM Monday at the church with the Rev. Joel Sember officiating. The Gallagher Funeral Home, Oconto, is assisting the family.
