Carl M. Zimanek, 91, of Oconto, passed away Sunday, January 8, 2012 at Country House, Oconto. Carl was born February 2, 1920 in Pensaukee to the late John and Anna (Kozielc) Zimanek. He married Rose Czachor on January 12, 1946, and in 1996 they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Carl was inducted into the US Army on February 5, 1942, he served one year with a general hospital as an ambulance driver, and transferred to the 83rd Division as a combat medic during the Battle of the Bulge and the Hurtgen Forest, for which he received two battle stars and the Bronze Star for meritous service. Carl was discharged on December 3, 1946. He received a certificate of appreciation from the French government for the liberation of France 1944-1995. On July 1, 1947 Carl started at the post office as a city mail carrier for 30 years, retiring in February of 1975. He then started an upholstery shop which kept him busy until he retired from upholstery. Carl was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Lena, Holy Name Society, D.A.V. and American Legion Post# 74, Oconto. Carl is survived by his wife Rose Zimanek, Oconto; a son Jim (Kay) Zimanek, Appleton; daughter-in-law Brenda Zimanek, Oconto; sister Adeline (Paul) Pitroski, Abrams; sister-in-law Bernadine Zimanek, Pensaukee; two grandchildren Jason (Jacqueline Rizzo) Zimanek, Mark (Michelle) Zimanek; and one great grandchild Samantha Rose. He was preceded in death by a son Kenneth Zimanek and four brothers Albert, Louis, Anton and John “Jack” Zimanek. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Oconto, from 9 to 11 AM Wednesday, January 11, 2012. Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated 11 AM Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Bob Karuhn officiating. Burial will be at the Oconto Catholic Cemetery with Military Rites by the American Legion Post# 74. The Gallagher Funeral Home, Oconto, is assisting the family.
