Obituary for Audrey June Rietz

Audrey Rietz peacefully passed away on October 25, 2014. Audrey was born on March 30th 1930, to Henry and Margaret (Richter) Krueger. She married Charles Rietz on June 21, 1952, and they had two sons. Her upbringing (and that of her children) was filled with rich experiences in Oconto’s final days of lumbering and commercial fishing. Her mother and father operated Krueger’s Fish and Lumber Companies on the riverbank along Water Street and they established Krueger’s Ranch Resort on Oconto’s North Shore. Audrey and her sister enjoyed a treasure trove of building materials and adventure supplies. They watched as their father built his herring boats…the Audrey June, the Margie Jane, and the Aud Ju Mar. Audrey’s stories were rich in recollections of Chicago fish mongers, gill nets, smoke houses, ice harvesting, carp seined by the thousands for the Kosher market, and the southbound train shipment. At the North Shore Resort Audrey enjoyed horseback riding with her lifelong friend Donna (Lindgren) Rasmussen. Following graduation from Oconto Senior High School she attended Marinette County Normal earning her teaching certificate. She started her career at the one room school in Stiles. Teaching became her true calling; she worked in the Oconto School District for more than 30 years. Audrey taught kindergarten at Lincoln School and then served as one of Wisconsin’s last one room school teachers at McDowell School north of town. Audrey took action to inspire elementary readers detected as having challenges. She knew how to identify what could be done to bring students up to their ability. Her boss, John B. LeMay, saw that she was on to something. He empowered Audrey to establish a reading program she titled CLIP….Clinic for Learning by Individual Prescription. This broke new ground in addressing individual student needs and gained wide recognition. Audrey was a devout Christian and ordained Presbyterian elder. She cherished her family at the First Presbyterian Church. She repeatedly served on the church’s governing session. Audrey extended her joy in music by establishing a hand bell choir. She taught Sunday School and enjoyed all church activities. Her vision of a thriving church membership was forefront. Audrey loved spending time around the piano with Kristen and Jennifer. Her joys included painting and performing. She was a charter member of the Machickanee Players and served as both actor and director. All agree; her enthusiastic storytelling is famous.
Audrey is survived by her husband Charles; one son, Jay (Susan); two grandchildren, Kristen Rietz and Jennifer (Rietz) Cortright (Luke); two great-grandchildren, Grace and Clara Cortright; and one sister, Margery (Krueger) Christiansen. She was preceded in death by her son, Mark.
The family will greet visitors from 4 to 8 pm on Wednesday, October 29th at Gallagher Funeral Home Oconto. Visitation continues on Thursday, October 30th from 10 to11 am at First Presbyterian Church. Funeral service will be at 11. Funeral services will be conducted 11 AM Thursday at the church with the Rev. Craig Alwin officiating. Online condolences may be expressed at www.gallagherfuneralhome.net.
In lieu of floral gifts a memorial fund will be established for First Presbyterian Church.
