Obituary for Arleen H. Gabrielson

Arleen Hazel (Euler) Gabrielson passed away peacefully with family at her side on Saturday, April 4, 2015 at Rennes Health and Rehab Center, Peshtigo. Arleen was born on July 27, 1920 in LaCrosse, to the late Arthur and Hazel (Hoha) Euler. She grew up in Wabeno, and always loved it there returning often throughout her life to vacation and visit old friends. She especially loved the Trump Lake area where she could be in the outdoors hiking, biking, camping and picking berries. She graduated from Wabeno HS in 1938 and attended Oshkosh State Teachers College graduating in 1942 with a BS degree in Elementary Education. Following graduation Arleen taught in Sheboygan and Wausau.
In 1944 Arleen married Fred Gabrielson, a soldier she had met on a blind date and who had swept her off her feet with his dancing. Their courtship and marriage during those war years was a time she loved to talk about to the very end. After the war Fred and Arleen settled in the Milwaukee area and raised 3 children, Pete, Ann and Kris. Here Fred established his own business, Gabrielson Feeds, as a successful feed and grain broker. This life brought them into contact with some of their best life-long friends in the feed and grain business throughout the state of Wisconsin and the mid-west. Eventually, they settled in Whitefish Bay where they had their home and raised their children. During this time Arleen returned to teaching as one of the first Head Start teachers in the City of Milwaukee. She always smiled when she talked about the young children she worked with there, they had a special place in her heart.
In 1971 she and Fred moved to Oconto where they lived until 1979 when he passed away from a heart attack. A year later she moved to Florida, but after 4 years Arleen had enough of the warm sunny weather and returned to Wisconsin and settled in Green Bay to be closer to her children and grandchildren. In 1987 she built a home in Ashwaubeon, 2 blocks from Lambeau Field and lived there independently until she was 90. She loved it there and her home became one of the most beloved Packer parking spots around. For over 20 years, her parkers returned year after year and were in many ways part of her extended family. “Gramma” always watched over them carefully.
From 1991 to 2011 she volunteered at Bellin Hospital until she retired at the age of 91 totaling more than 6000 hours of service during that period of time. She served in several different capacities including the chairperson of the Bellin pediatrics tours that brought hundreds of children to the hospital for tours. She loved this job and her Bellin “family” and always had a great story about her days in transport when at 5’1” 110 lbs she got to oversee the transport of many bigger patients such as Packer players Chad Clifton and Reggie White.
Most recently she resided at Brookview Meadows in Howard and Rennes East in Peshtigo, Wisconsin.
Throughout her life she was a member of many Christian churches, most recently Pilgrim Congregational Church, Green Bay and First Presbyterian Church, Oconto.
Arleen was an outgoing spunky strong minded person with a gift of gab and a heart of gold. She loved her family and her friends and never had trouble making new ones and she will be deeply missed by all of us.
She is survived by her sister Patricia Polasek, son Pete (Patty) Gabrielson, Oconto; daughters Ann Buerger, MA; and Kris (Ken) Katch, IL. She is further survived by 6 grandchildren/step-grandchildren, JoAnna (Paul) O’Connor, FL, Joshua (Christy) Gabrielson, CO; Matt Katch Japan, Stefanie Buerger (fiancée Joe Gomez), CA; Kym Belongia, PA, Keith (Angelina) Belongia, Oconto; and 5 great grandchildren Mali, Cal, Olivia, Sloan and Lincoln. Arleen was predeceased by her, husband Fred and two brothers Edward and Buddy.
A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, Oconto, on Saturday, April 25, 2015. Visitation from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm with a service at 4:00 pm and burial of the remains at the Evergreen Cemetery in Oconto to follow. Online condolences and an expanded obituary may be found at www.gallagherfuneralhome.net .
The family would like to thank the staff at Brookview Meadows and Rennes East for the good care and kindness given, the Bellin staff members that were like a second family to her, the many doctors that assisted in her care over the years, Pastor Craig Alwin and Gallagher Funeral Home for guiding us along and Val who came and helped Mom and was her friend.
