Alfred “Joe” W. Mraz, 94, of Oconto, passed away Saturday, February 2, 2013 at Bellin Health Oconto Hospital. Joe was born September 27, 1918 in Oconto to the late Joseph and Mathilda (Christiansen) Mraz. He married Eleanor DeHut on March 22, 1950. Joe served his country during WWII. He joined the National Guard, Company C, 127th Infantry, in October of 1940 and was sent to Louisiana. After serving a year in Louisiana, Joe was sent to California and then on to India. Joe was Sgt. of a motor pool bringing heavy equipment up front. He also served in Burma and assisted in building the Burma road. Joe’s sister, Lt. Genevieve Mraz and brother, Staff Sgt. Joseph Mraz Jr., were all deployed at the same time. Joe was a great care giver to his wife Eleanor for the past 10 years. After his military service, Joe worked as a auto mechanic and body repair in Oconto for over 40 years. He enjoyed wood turning and could fix anything. Joe was a 65 year member of the Oconto American Legion and a member of the First American Lutheran Church. Joe is survived by his wife, Eleanor Mraz, Oconto; a daughter, Linda (Robert) Hearley, Abrams; two sons, Doug (Jeanne) Mraz, Green Bay; Robert Mraz, Oconto; six grandchildren, Michelle Mraz, Sara (Dan) Hacker, Scott (Kate) Hearley, Heidi (Dan) Kuehn, Brian (Heather) Hearley, Jason (Jenny Fitzgerald) Hearley; five great-grandchildren, Ali, Belle, Irie, Gavin and Tristan Hearley. And a great-grandchild is due in July. Joe is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by five brothers and sisters, Genevieve “Babe” Mraz, Joseph Mraz Jr., Mae Ellman, Agnes (Art) VanRossum, and infant sister Kathleen Mraz, and a daughter-in-law Sharon Mraz. The family will receive relatives and friends at the First American Lutheran Church, Oconto, from 10 AM to 12 Noon Wednesday, February 6, 2013. Funeral services will be conducted 12 Noon on Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Mary Zupansic. Military Rites will be performed after the funeral in front of church by the Oconto American Legion Jones Modrow Young Post #74. The Gallagher Funeral Home, Oconto, is assisting the family.
